Cambodia High and Low Water
The river decides the route; here is how to plan around it.

On most rivers, water levels are a background worry. In Cambodia they are the main planning question. The Mekong rises dramatically in the monsoon and falls through the dry months, and the Tonle Sap lake swells and shrinks with it.

What Changes
In high water
Ships can travel further up the Tonle Sap; floating villages are fully afloat; landscapes are green and flooded; weather is hot, humid and often stormy in the afternoons.
In low water
Ships cannot reach the lake; the river portion ends further south, often around Kampong Cham or Phnom Penh; Siem Reap is reached by road or air; days ashore are drier.
Every season
Phnom Penh, the Mekong villages and Angkor itself are on the menu year-round.
Water Level Questions
Which months are high water in Cambodia?
Roughly the second half of the wet season into early winter, but the exact window shifts every year with rainfall. Lines publish separate high-water and low-water versions of their itineraries.
Will my cruise be cancelled in low water?
Mekong lines plan for low water in advance rather than cancelling: they adjust where the ship turns around and add road (or air) transfers. Your quote and final documents describe the plan.
Is the dry season too hot?
The coolest, driest stretch is usually the most comfortable for temple visits. Heat builds toward the end of the dry season, which is often the hottest time of year.

Packing for Each Season
In high water, pack light, quick-drying clothes, a compact umbrella and insect repellent; afternoon downpours are common but usually brief. In low water, the days are drier and the temple paths dustier, so bring a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. In any month, temples and the Royal Palace require covered shoulders and knees, and a light scarf is useful against sun and air-conditioning alike.
Whichever season you choose, remember that ships on the Mekong are small and sell out early for the most popular months. Booking well ahead gives you the widest choice of cabins and dates.
